Speed and Core Web Vitals

Slow stores don't lose ranking. They lose revenue.

App audit, theme surgery, image pipeline and render path work on your live store. Every change measured, before and after, against real Core Web Vitals field data.

Where the seconds go

It is almost never the theme.

Apps you forgot you installed.

Every app injects scripts and uninstalling an app rarely removes its code. Most stores we audit are carrying leftovers from three or four apps that are no longer in use.

Images uploaded at 4000 pixels wide.

Shopify's CDN will serve a resized image if you ask it to. Most themes do not ask properly, so a mobile visitor downloads a desktop hero.

Everything loads at once, in the wrong order.

Render blocking CSS, synchronous third party scripts and no priority hints. The browser cannot paint until it has finished work that did not need to happen first.

What is included

Speed work measured against field data.

Full app audit

Every installed app measured for weight, request count and actual usage. You get a keep, replace or remove recommendation on each one with the monthly saving attached.

Script and render path work

Render blocking resources deferred, third party tags moved behind consent or interaction, critical CSS inlined and priority hints set on the LCP element.

Image pipeline rebuild

Correct responsive image markup, AVIF and WebP through Shopify's CDN, explicit dimensions to kill layout shift and lazy loading everywhere below the fold.

Font loading

Subset, preloaded and served with a swap strategy so text is never invisible.

Theme code surgery

Dead CSS removed, JavaScript bundles trimmed, unused sections deleted and leftover app snippets cleaned out of the theme.

Before and after report

Lab data from Lighthouse and field data from Chrome UX Report, measured on the same pages before and after, on mobile.

Speed FAQ

Core Web Vitals without the jargon fog.

What is a good Shopify speed score?

Ignore the single Lighthouse number, it swings wildly on Shopify. Look at Core Web Vitals field data instead. Google's thresholds are a Largest Contentful Paint under 2.5 seconds, an Interaction to Next Paint under 200 milliseconds and a Cumulative Layout Shift under 0.1, measured at the 75th percentile of real visits. When the theme architecture is the bottleneck, move to a Shopify store redesign.

Why is my Shopify store slow when the theme is fast?

Because the theme is rarely the problem. Installed apps, third party marketing tags, oversized images and leftover code from uninstalled apps account for most of the weight on the stores we audit. The theme is what gets blamed because it is the only part people can see. A Shopify store audit ranks which of those issues actually cost revenue.

Does site speed actually affect sales?

Yes. The effect is largest on paid traffic where you have already paid for the visit. Speed also affects Google rankings through Core Web Vitals, though as a smaller factor than content relevance. The commercial case is usually conversion rate rather than ranking.

Will you break my store?

Everything is built and tested on a duplicate theme first. Nothing touches the live theme until you have reviewed it on a preview link and signed off.

How long does the speed work take?

Two weeks for a standard engagement, including the audit, the work and the before and after report. Stores with very heavy custom code or forty plus apps take longer and we will say so during scoping.

Do the results last?

The theme side does. The app side depends on you. Install six new apps next quarter and the numbers move back. We include a short guide on evaluating an app's speed cost before you install it.
